Happy National Scotch Day, my friends! (Yes, here at Drink Wine With Dinner®, we often talk about “adult beverages” other than wine.)

And Scotch whisky (please note, no “e”) is a great choice for a refreshing cocktail on a lazy summer weekend.

My first adult experience with Scotch, unadulterated, was not a pleasant one. I was a young bride, and my new husband and I had been invited to dinner at his father’s friends’ house.

National Scotch Day

Sheep Dip (love the name!) blends 16 single malts.

The four of us happily sipped Scotch on the rocks and nibbled on a few apps, including caviar.

I only remember that because it made everyone thirsty, so the Scotch glasses kept getting refilled.

Before I knew it, the hostess had excused herself. Hmmmm….

Next, we were being ushered to the door. No dinner. And after that, it was a very long time before I touched Scotch again. (Not caviar, though – but that’s another story….)

I grew up in a Scotch-loving Italian family. (Go figure!)

Dewar’s was my parents’ house brand (Chivas Regal for special occasions), and the Scotch Sour was their go-to cocktail.

Mom and Dad liked ’em on plenty of rocks, in tall glasses, with old-school maraschino cherry on top.

Tangy, strong, and pure. No bitters or egg white.

As I became an older teen, I got to play mixologist, often enjoying (a short) one myself.

These days, I mostly lean more toward wine than whisky. Even so, I get a yearning – every now and then – for a “wee dram” from bonny Scotland.

As the clans of the tartans, kilts and bagpipes would say, Slàinte mhòr agus a h-uile beannachd duibh.
