Tropical Vacay in NYC

Tropical Vacay in NYC? Well, it sure feels like the tropics – Colombian food for lunch one day, Caribbean another; warm water, sunny skies, endless beach….

Welcome, my friends, to my tropical vacay in NYC!

Huh? Tropical vacay? In NYC??? Um, isn’t New York at about 40° latitude, and don’t the tropics start at about 23 1/2°?

Well, yeah. But if you’ve ever spent a midsummer week in the Big Apple, you’ll know that the heat and humidity make it feel that way.

And since I actually like the heat (thanks to my Italian gene pool, I imagine), this was a welcome bonus to my recent beachy visit with my wonderful daughter Siri.

What do thirsty NY beachgoers drink on a 90°+ day? Try “Frozé” (yep – a rosé slushy. Buzz plus brain freeze!)

Although we were technically in New York City for almost the entire time, she and I never set foot in Manhattan except to use Grand Central Station as a travel hub.

Except for a couple of forays northward into Westchester County, Siri and I spent all our time in two other boroughs of NYC.

Besides Brooklyn, where she both lives and operates her thriving boutique, Treehouse, and where we spent a couple of nights, we stayed mostly in Queens. (Cue Eddie Murphy in Coming to America.) 😉

What’s that about? Well, Siri has been running a cool beachfront pop-up store this summer (in addition to Treehouse), right on the boardwalk at Jacob Riis State Park.

Umbrellas as far as the eye can see! The water wasn’t crowded, though, and it’s much warmer than the Pacific near me.

Far side of Long Island. Right on the Atlantic. Surfers. Dolphins. Even the occasional whale (as well as great white sharks, we heard)!

A small sampling of Siri’s own jewelry line, Sirius Lux.

The building where Siri has set up her “Big Fun Beach” pop-up used to be a bathhouse back in the park’s 1930s heyday – perfect for these mini-shops, as well as all kinds of food booths.

In addition to her own Sirius Lux jewelry and Big Fun Thing clothing designs, Siri’s also selling lots of fun beachables.

Sarah arranges the Jams World rack.

Along with vintage sunglasses (a best seller) and plenty of beach dresses and coverups, she’s got cartoon-themed towels, swimsuits, flip-flops, and a rack of colorbright Jams World clothing for a taste of Hawaii.

It’s been a great way for Siri to expand both her product line and her customer base.

Perhaps even better, it’s giving her a way to vacay near home – just a ferry or bus ride from her Brooklyn digs.

Check out the “Party Bus” that runs from Brooklyn straight to the beach! Reserve your space, and enjoy free beer, hard cider, and coffee on board while you watch surfing videos. That’s Siri and Sarah unloading new stock for the pop-up store.

Authentic Colombian-style arepas – thick corn pancakes with savory toppings such as chicken and beef.

As far as eats were concerned, a highlight of our beach days was the Colombian food at Palenque.

They not only have a mini-kitchen on the boardwalk near Siri’s pop-up shop, but they’re also about to open a brick-and-mortar location near Siri’s Treehouse store in Brooklyn.

I was able to share Siri’s amazingly fun beach scene with her for most of my stay in New York – and I wish I could have stayed even longer. I’ll be back soon to share more of my “tropical vacay in NYC” with you!
